For adults and children alike, summer is the season to take in the mystery of the outdoors, its unexpected pleasures and hidden thrills.
But summer has its share of unpleasant discoveries, too — as dermatologists know all too well. For this is also the season of the mystery rash. “This time of year, a lot of people come in with rashes and have no idea what happened,” said Dr. Deborah S. Sarnoff, a dermatologist in New York.
In truth, many of these rashes are not at all mysterious. Very often, Dr. Sarnoff and other dermatologists find, they result from a photosensitivity reaction, a combination of the sun’s UVA radiation and exposure to a drug, perfume or another substance.
Many commonly used drugs can cause such a reaction, including antibiotics like the tetracyclines (doxycycline is one), ciprofloxacin and the sulfa drugs (Bactrim, for example); the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide; and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen and naproxen.
People with the photosensitive reactions “may have been on the drug for a long time, so they don’t put two and two together,” said Dr. Sarnoff, who is senior vice president of the Skin Cancer Foundation.
The full list of substances that can touch off a photosensitive reaction is very long and includes, ironically, sunscreens that contain benzophenones, the retinoids used to treat acne and sun-induced wrinkles, and fragrances like musk and coumarins.
The guilty substances change with the times, as compounds go in and out of fashion. But the problem never vanishes. New irritants frequently appear, keeping dermatologists on their toes and consumers mystified.
Most photosensitivity reactions result from exposure to UVA radiation, the so-called tanning rays that have been linked to premature aging of the skin and to melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.
UVA radiation can pass through glass, so a reaction can occur after a car ride or sitting indoors near a window, further mystifying affected individuals. And though the sun is the most common source of UVA radiation, it is not the only source. This type of UV radiation is found in tanning booths and, in small amounts, is emitted by fluorescent bulbs.
Some people also react to the wavelengths that make up visible light.

What You put on your Body is the Same as Eating it…
Often, when speaking with our customers at the shows, we remind them that what they put on their body is the same as eating it. Would you eat some of the items that are listed on the labels of many products?
With each purchase, we endorse those ingredients and encourage that company to continue doing business without regard to the harm that these products may cause to our bodies. When I read these labels and they have the 19-letter words that do not resemble anything recognizable, I walk away. Not that understanding the scientific descriptions and categories of ingredients is a bad thing; I just prefer a simpler approach to buying products, whether I am eating, buying body, or cleaning products, etc…
Our mothers and grandmothers understood that simple is better. I believe we should consider that good advice, follow their examples and live better, simpler lives.
“Live Out Loud!”

The health benefits of eucalyptus oil can be attributed to its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, and other medicinal properties. Eucalyptus essential oil is colorless and has a distinct taste and odor.
Though eucalyptus essential oil has most of the properties of a typical volatile oil, it is not very popular as an aromatherapy oil as it was little known before a few centuries. However, the numerous health benefits of eucalyptus oil have attracted the attention of the entire world to explore its usage in aromatherapy as well as conventional medicine.
Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from fresh leaves of the tall evergreen eucalyptus tree. The tree, which has the botanical name Eucalyptus Globulus is also known as fever tree, blue gum tree or stringy bark tree. Eucalyptus is native to Australia and has spread in the past few centuries to other parts of the world including India, Europe and South Africa. Though many countries produce eucalyptus oil in small quantities, the prime source of eucalyptus oil for the world is Australia.
Due to the medicinal uses of eucalyptus oil and the compound eucalyptol present in it, it is used in a variety of over the counter drugs including rubs, inhalers, liniments, rash creams, and mouthwashes. The health benefits of eucalyptus oil include the following:
- Respiratory Problems: Eucalyptus essential oil is effective for treating a number of respiratory problems including cold, cough, running nose, sore throat, asthma, nasal congestion, bronchitis and sinusitis. Eucalyptus oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti inflammatory and decongestant in nature which makes it a good ingredient for many medicines for treating respiratory problems. A study published in Laryngoscope in 2004 shows its usefulness in treating non-bacterial sinusitis. Patients suffering from non-bacterial sinusitis showed faster improvement when given medicines containing eucalyptus oil. Gargles of eucalyptus oil mixed with warm water are effective on treating sore throat.
- Wounds: Eucalyptus essential oil is a good antiseptic owing to its germicidal properties. On its exposure to air, ozone is formed which is a well-known antiseptic. Hence eucalyptus oil is used for healing wounds, ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions and sores. It is also effective on insect bites and stings.
- Muscle Pain: During muscle and joint pains, massaging eucalyptus oil on the skin surface helps in getting relief from the pain. The volatile eucalyptus oil is analgesic and anti inflammatory in nature. Therefore it is often recommended to patients suffering from rheumatism, lumbago, sprained ligaments and tendons, stiff muscles, aches, fibrosis and even nerve pain. The oil is massage in circular motion on affected areas.
- Mental Exhaustion: An important reason why people like using eucalyptus oil is that it provides a cooling and refreshing effect. Normally people suffering from any disorder are down. Eucalyptus oil, which is stimulating, removes exhaustion and mental sluggishness and rejuvenates the spirits of the sick. It is also effective in treating stress and mental disorders.
- Dental Care: Eucalyptus essential oil is very effective against cavities, dental plaques, gingivitis and other dental infections due to its germicidal properties.
-
Skin Care: Eucalyptus oil is often applied topically to treat skin infections.
- Diabetes: Eucalyptus oil when taken internally controls blood sugar.
- Fever: It is also used for treating fever and reducing the body temperature. Therefore it is also called fever oil.
- Intestinal Germs: Eucalyptus oil is a vermifuge and hence is used to remove germs in the intestine.
Other benefits of eucalyptus oil include the following:
- Room Freshener: The antiseptic and deodorant nature of eucalyptus oil makes it a perfect room freshener for hospitals and sickbed atmosphere. It also kills bacteria and germs in the air and hence keeps the room environment clean.
- Soaps: Eucalyptus oil has applications in soaps, detergents and household cleaners as well.
- Mouth Wash: As mentioned above, the oil is a prime ingredient in many mouthwashes and toothpastes.
- Sauna: Many people add eucalyptus oil to baths, spas and saunas due to its refreshing and antiseptic effect.
Usage of eucalyptus oil in aromatherapy is increasing gradually as it also blends well with many other essential oils including thyme essential oil, rosemary essential oil, marjoram essential oil, lavender essential oil, cedarwood essential oil, frankincense essential oil, etc.
One should take care while using eucalyptus oil. If taken in large quantities, eucalyptus oil is toxic. It may also interfere with homeopathic treatments.

Exercise isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when we’re feeling stressed or anxious. For many of us, it’s more tempting to grab a pint of ice cream and the remote control than to head to the gym. But before you open that freezer, consider this: Recent studies have found that people who exercise regularly aren’t just more physically fit than those who don’t, they’re generally happier and less stressed, too.
Exercising just 30 minutes several times a week can relieve general anxiety and stress, and can be an effective treatment for more serious conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado suggested that physical activity also can prevent stress to our immune systems, leaving us less susceptible to some bacterial and viral infections.
Perhaps most importantly, studies have shown that people who exercise have a more positive outlook on the world in general. The good news is that you don’t need to train for a marathon to brighten your perspective on life — for people new to exercise, even as little as 10 minutes a day has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and promote a general sense of well-being.

My approach to the Eczema Dis*Ease is changing…
I’ve used Shea butter for moisturizing for years, I believe it is one of the reasons I’ve been successful at keeping this dis*ease on the Healthier side of the Scale
Alata soap for cleansing because it’s gentle and years back I found I had to get away from the well known soaps and body washes, they added to the dry ash in my reality
Recently I had a major Break*Out which scared me enough to send me to MDs and had me using their steroids and advice
I am a Natural Living kind of Woman, the pharmaceuticals don’t sit work comfortably in my continued balancing towards my Healthy Body*Self
My approach is to make changes every 3-4 weeks which gives me time to see and note the results of each step
These are a few steps I have taken in the last few weeks
-increase vitamin D intake [as per the Doc]
-apple cider vinegar with honey as tea [my holistic mothers/sistahs recommend this highly]
-moisturizing 2-4 times @day, can’t every be enough in this dry ash existence and added Emu oil which has become my out of the shower before I pat dry in place of the Olive oil, which was a bit heavy for me but another great moisturizer
-increasing fruit and vegetable intake
…we continue this walk to deal with the Dis*Ease called Eczema, just remember that we must Re*Balance our Body*Self in a more Health*Full place!
Please share Your Thoughts, recommendations from our Family Wisdoms, Elixirs that have worked for You, Your Path…
